Nez Perce National Historical Park (east of Lewiston on Hwy 95; Spalding, ID; 208.843.2261

For thousands of years the valleys, prairies and plateaus of north central Idaho and northeastern Oregon have been home to the Nez Perce people. Today’s Reservation is located in north central Idaho where the National Park Service has the headquarters for Nez Perce National Historical Park, which features 38 sites, scattered across four states. Many sites tell of Nez Perce legends and history while others cover their interactions with fur traders, missionaries, soldiers, settlers and explorers. Lewis and Clark’s travels through Nez Perce country are featured at the Lolo Trail, Weippe Prairie, Canoe Camp and Long Camp sites. A visitor center at Spalding has brochures, museum exhibits, a film, bookstore and Ranger-led programs daily at 11, 1:00 and 3:00 in the summer.

Asotin County Family Aquatic Center (1603 Dustan Loop, Clarkston, WA; 509.758.0110)

At the Aquatic Center, you can play in the water all year long. The indoor lap pool and activities pool offer an adventure no matter what the weather is outside. It’s the place to go for swim lessons, swim meets, birthday parties and just to splash. In the summer months, hit the outdoor Lagoon Waterpark with a wave pool, lazy river, water slides and and zero-depth entry activities pool. The Great Escape (2nd Friday of each month) gives parents a night off where kids are entertained with culture, crafts, games, movies, swimming and more! Bring their sleeping bags and pillows for their great adventure.

Hells Canyon

A 1/2-day or full-day trip on a guided jet boat tour is an outdoor adventure into history with stories of abandoned mines, shipwreck sites and Native American crossings. Get a close-up view of ancient petroglyphs, visit Kirkwood Ranch, a mining museum located deep in the canyon, and catch glimpses of bighorn sheep, otters, bear and other wildlife. Play on the white sandy beaches and swim in the crystal clear water.

Wolf Education and Research Center (418 Nez Perce, Winchester, ID; 208.924.6960) – Observe the Sawtooth Pack of wolves of the Nez Perce in this 20-acre enclosure of rolling timberland with meadows and streams. The Center is dedicated to providing public education and scientific research concerning the gray wolf and its habitat. Interactive and information displays are at the visitor center. Hiking trails begin at the visitor center.

Aerial Tours – Soar with the birds in a hot air balloon ride over the valley. If the wind is right, they even touch down in the Snake River. You and your family will have the experience of a lifetime. Adventurist Air has several packages to choose from. Kiwi Air Helicopters can give you a new perspective of Hells Canyon or any other destination you choose with tours from 15 minutes to over 2 hours.

Lewiston Village Center Cinemas – Catch the latest movies on the big screen

Orchards Lanes (16 lanes; 244 Thain Rd, Lewiston ID; 208.743.7822) and Lancer Lanes (24 lanes; 1250 Bridge St, Clarkston, WA; 509.758.6731) – Bowling, game rooms and food make these locations a great place for a party.

Gateway Golf Center (725 Port Way, Clarkston, WA; 509.758.4366) – Play a round of miniature golf on a natural grass course.

Swimming Beaches – Beachview Park, Chief Looking Glass Park, Chief Timothy Park, Hells Gate State Park

Alive After Five – This event happens the first Thursday of every month (May – Sept) in downtown Clarkston and the 3rd Wednesday in downtown Lewiston. Musicians, food and fantastic local entertainment make it a great event to bring the family.
